About The Newark Police Foundation
The Newark Police Foundation was established in 2006 as a nonprofit entity dedicated to substantially strengthening the Newark Police Department in the provision of more efficient services and improving the safety of residents. NPF provides funding for, among other things, the purchase and deployment of the latest available technology in crime-stopping methodology and for crime fighting programs.
Strategies
Early in its establishment, NPF raised over $1 million—money that will assist in purchasing crime-stopping aids such as video cameras for police vehicles and new systems for fingerprint identification and license plate scanning.
NPF will support crime-stopping programs by setting up tip lines that provide 100 percent anonymity for callers, offering financial incentives for tips that lead to arrests by police as well as recovery of guns.
NPF will contribute to upgrading police department facilities by making public infrastructure investments that create a more efficient and empowered police department.
Making a Difference
The NPF pointedly assists and encourages the Newark Police Department through funding and collaboration on programs, research studies and equipment upgrades. They also fund research studies to improve program effectiveness for police activities and education in community awareness and skill development to strengthen the partnership between police and the public. Donors they identify and with whom they cultivate positive financial relationships contribute the funds NPF receives. These funds have significant impact on the Newark Police Department’s ability to pay for services and resources that the city cannot readily fund through its budget.
Implications For Effectiveness
The organizational structure of the NPF meets the best practices standards of other successful municipal police foundations, particularly the New York City model—the first of its type in the country. Like its counterparts the NPF, seeks to support innovative projects, and strengthen its public-private relationship with the Newark Police Department by concentrating on providing the department the means to launch experimental programs and escalating its professionalism.
